For those of you in MLM/Network Marketing, the chance of becoming your own boss and becoming financially independent is enough to drive you to do just about anything – I understand. I know first hand what that feels like because I was involved in the industry for almost 10 years, first with a company that almost every person alive, at least here in the U.S. anyway, is familiar with and my second time around with a company that is steadily moving up in the same “household name” category as well.
As I look back now, I can see how much of myself I let go in pursuit of something, had I stayed, I would probably still be looking for today. It wasn’t the opportunity that was a factor (although the first company does have a history of selling over-the-top stories of success), it was several huge mistakes on my part that caused almost a decade of my life to go by without ever realizing the riches and glamour I thought I would obtain. I write this out to you, whether you’re brand new (a Greenie) or a grizzled veteran who hasn’t made your mark yet, – beware of who you become in the pursuit of “success.”
It may sound like I’m a bitter and disappointed “wanna-be” that couldn’t hack it. Hey, it’s all in how you choose to see anything, but I think that label, if it’s going to be used at all, should be directed at those people who join your company, talking up a big game, only to be blown out of the business two weeks later. If you’ve been involved long enough, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
No, what I’m referring to are a few key factors, if not given the proper attention – will cause you to waste years of your life and never get much accomplished. This is the first of a seven part series on steps I feel every MLM/Network Marketer should take to get off to a great start. The seven steps are:
1) Be Crystal Clear About What You Want From Your Opportunity
2) Focus On The Next Level
3) Don’t Alienate The People You Showed Up To Your Opportunity With
4) Learn to Read Between The Lines
5) Develop The “Necessary” Skills ASAP
6) Avoid Becoming a Self-Help Junkie
7) Become a Goal-hitter, Not Just A Goal-Setter
Even if you’re a veteran that hasn’t made the splash you thought you’d make by now – it’s never too late to start again, so why not start right now?!
1) Be Crystal Clear About What You Want From Your Opportunity
“The” biggest mistake most people make when getting involved in a Multi-level Marketing opportunity is never clarifying exactly what it is they want from the opportunity – I know, I did this for much of my career. Rather than focusing on what the top person in your company makes or how big their organization is, it might make more sense to write out the specific results you really want to achieve.
If all you did was write out a list of what you wanted, specifically, and focused on that list daily, you would block out most of the nonsense people fill their heads up with. Example: “Wow, I can’t wait to have 1,000 people on my team!” or “I wonder how much [top earner] made this month, let me go find out!”
That kind of thinking leads you down the path of frustration. Instead, use “Clear Focus,” which is a strategy that gets you to zero in on what really matters most. Eliminating the “mental noise,” we allow ourselves to be bombarded by, will cause you to follow in the footsteps of every other high-earning MLM/Network Marketer and lead you straight to the top of your company – and more importantly, stay there.
